Officials with the National Weather Service have confirmed the third tornado of the year in New York State. On average, there are between 8 and 10 tornadoes a year in New York State, and we have had three in the past two weeks.

Third Tornado Confirmed In New York State

This weekend, the National Weather Service in Buffalo confirmed that the third tornado of the year made touchdown in New York State. The tornado touched down on April 15th and was on the ground for around two minutes. Wind speeds reached 80 miles per hour, and the tornado covered about a 1/4 of a mile.


Tornadoes In New York State In 2026

The first tornado of the year was confirmed on March 31st. The tornado touched down in Machias and was on the ground for 3 minutes, reaching wind speeds of 107 miles per hour, making it an EF-1 tornado.

The second tornado of the year was also in Machias, this time on April 15th. That tornado was only on the ground for a minute with wind speeds around 75 miles per hour. It was classified as an EF-0 tornado.  


This week's weather looks to be much more settled than last week, with plenty of sunshine on Tuesday through Friday.
