How to Keep Your Carved Pumpkin From Rotting
If you carved your pumpkin October 1st, chances are by now, it looks more like a giant orange raisin than a gourd.
Obviously there's still time to get another one, and by using these tips, it may stay fresher, longer!
- After carving, wipe the outside down with a damp cloth to remove any dirt and leftover pumpkin guts
- Spray the inside of the carved/gutted pumpkin with a bleach solution (1 tablespoon of bleach in a quart of water, put in spray bottle). This will kill bacteria and slow down mold growth.
- Rub any carved or cut surfaces (anywhere the flesh is exposed) with petroleum jelly. This makes a bit of a barrier for bacteria and mold, too!
- Keep it out of direct sunlight, and in a cool place -- but not below freezing!
Pumpkin isn't just for your PSL, BTW. Here are some delicious pumpkin recipes!
