Hidden Costs of Giving a Pup for Christmas
You've seen the commercials and Christmas movies, a puppy seems like the perfect Christmas gift for kids! Initially the cost for a puppy may not seem prohibitive but unfortunately gift buyers don't think 'long term'.
According to Yahoo here are some of the estimated costs a new dog owner should anticipate.
Linda Ann Nickerson says before bringing that cute Christmas puppy home, a few key items must be obtained. These include a doggy bed ($35-$50), pet carrier ($65), collar ($12), leash ($10), covered food bin ($15), water and food bowls ($10 each), and dog food. A month's supply of quality puppy chow may cost $20 or more ($240 annually).
Now think about some of these additional costs...
Health-related needs: $450, Miscellaneous necessities: $500 (not including invisible fencing), food, treats, it all adds up, experts ballpark the cost at about $1,830 for the first year!
Also it is good to remember that cute little puppies eventually become full-grown dogs. I am not trying to throw a wet blanket on your Christmas surprise, just consider all that goes into pet ownership. By the way we have two!
Merry Christmas!
