Here are today's trending stories in Western New York.

1 –Major changes are coming to the City of Buffalo as Mayor Bryon Brown announced yesterday he will be leaving this month. Brown has accepted a new job as CEO and President of Western Regional Off-Track Betting. When he leaves, current city common council president Chris Scanlon will take over as acting Mayor. He will have the job as acting Mayor until next November when voters will have a chance to vote for a new mayor.

2 –We will have a dry start to our Tuesday but we will see some rain showers move into the area later on this afternoon. We are expecting some pop-up showers across the region and will a majority of the rain coming overnight. Some more scattered rain is expected Wednesday morning before sunshine returns on Thursday heading into the weekend.

3– We are now five weeks away from Election Day and there are some deadlines in New York state that you will have to meet if you want to register or get an absentee ballot. If you need to register to vote the deadline to sign up is Oct 26th. That is the same date as the deadline to request an absentee ballot. Early voting in New York will run from October 26th through November 2nd with election day set for Tuesday, November 5th.

4 – There are several Western New Yorkers who are down south helping those in need after Hurricane Helene swept through the region. The American Red Cross of Western New York yesterday assigned two additional regional volunteers to assist with relief efforts bringing the total number of volunteers to 12. 7 volunteers have been deployed to northern Florida,· 3 volunteers have been deployed to Georgia, and 2 volunteers were deployed to North Carolina. Over 1400 American Red Cross volunteers from across the country are offering aid to those in need.

5 – We could see another increase in the cost of goods as port workers have gone on strike. Workers at ports from New England to Texas including some here in New York went on strike at midnight this morning. They are striking with the hopes of getting pay raises and better working conditions. The strike could cause issued with supply chains and lead to an increase in the cost of goods. This is the first strike at ports since the 1970s.

6 – You won’t have to wait much longer to get into the Christmas spirit. Both the Hallmark Channel and Great American Family Channel announced they will start airing new holiday movies this month. The Hallmark Channel will air new Christmas movies every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday starting on October 18th, while GAC will air new Christmas movies on Fridays and Saturdays starting on October 19th.
