Free Phone Calls For Prisoners In New York State

Starting on August 1st, all phone calls made by prisoners in New York State jails will soon be free.

Currently, prisoners are allowed up to three phone calls per week at a maximum of 15 minutes per call. If they want more or longer time, they have to pay for the calls themselves.

Under the new rule, prisoners will not have to pay any money for calls. The state will cover the cost at an average of 1.9 cents per minute.

How Much Will The Free Calls For Prisoners Cost?

According to an article in The New York Times, the new program will cost New York State around $9 million per year. Right now, prisoners in New York State pay roughly $13 million in phone charges.

Why Is New York State Making The Switch To Free Phone Calls?

One of the main reasons the state is making the switch is to increase the chances that prisoners become reformed while in prison and become productive members of society when they are released.

New York State will become the 6th state to mandate free phone calls for prisoners. Jails in New York City already allow for free phone calls, so beginning on August 1st, that privilege will transfer to all prisoners in the state.
