We are in the middle of one of the hottest stretches of summer here in Western New York, but we ALL KNOW what is right around the corner.

Growing here in Western New York, I am accustomed to the changes in the season, and it seems like over the last several years, summer has been getting shorter and winter has been getting longer.

So there is one question we all want to know right now.

When Is The First Snow Of Winter Coming To Western New York?

So, there are a couple of different answers here.

First off, we are going to go with the historical average date of the first measurable snow, which is at least 1 inch or greater. According to the National Weather Service the average date for the 1st measurable snow is November 8th.

That means we still have roughly three months of summer and fall weather before the white stuff comes flying down around Western New York.

Now, let's look at what could be the earliest date for measurable snowfall in Western New York. If this happens, our summer and fall will be short, and we could be in the running for a loooooong winter.

The earliest measurable snowfall in Western New York was on October 6th, 1991. So if we get snow in early October, we only have two more months of summer and fall.

Now, let's look at the opposite. We want a long summer and fall, so when was the latest measurable snowfall date in Western New York's history?

That was December 18th, 2015. Imagine no snow until a week before Christmas? That would give us four more months of summer and fall.
