According to the latest figures released by Erie County, there were 748 new COVID-19 cases on Monday, May 9th, and 5,054 total cases over the past 7 days. The total number of new cases per 100,000 Erie County residents over the past 7 days is 530. That adds up to a 25% positivity rate this past Monday and a 7-day positivity rate of 20.2%.
On the heels of this news, the CDC has elevated the COVID community level to "high" for Erie county.
The CDC created the community level scale to help communities decide what preventative steps should be taken based on the latest COVID data in their communities.
The CDC says on their website:
Levels can be low, medium, or high and are determined by looking at hospital beds being used, hospital admissions, and the total number of new COVID-19 cases in an area. Take precautions to protect yourself and others from COVID-19 based on the COVID-19 Community Level in your area.
New York Governor Kathy Hochul added:
We have come a long way in the past two years, so let's continue to use the tools we know help protect against, treat and prevent serious illnesses from COVID-19...I also encourage every New Yorker to make sure you are fully vaccinated and up to date on your booster doses.
Western New York's current 7-day average of cases per 100K population is 62.43 , which is the highest in the state and well above the statewide average of 47.96.
