2025 has started off very cold in New York State and it looks like that cold trend will continue through the rest of the month.

A major arctic air block is expected to sweep across the state and will bring plenty of cold air to the Empire State.

Some meteorologists are calling for this January to be the coldest in New York State history, but will it be the coldest month ever?


The current record for the coldest month ever in New York State was set in Rochester, New York in 2015. The average daily temperature that month was 12.2 degrees. The rest of the temperatures across the state were below average with almost 30% of the days failing to get warmer than 20 degrees.

Will we get that cold this month? It looks like we might get close. The 10 weather forecast for most of the state is calling for temperatures to be near 25-30 degrees which is cold but not record-setting cold.

Speaking of cold, the coldest day ever recorded actually happened twice in New York State. Temperatures dropped to −52 degrees on February 9th, 1934 at Stillwater Reservoir and once again on February 18, 1979 at at Old Forge.

The temperatures this month won't get that cold. Overall January is usually the closest month of the year in New York State, so here is hoping for a nice warm-up in February and March.
