Breakfast and lunches all across New York State could become more bland over the next several weeks.

Currently, there are over 45,000 dock workers on strike and this could have a big impact on certain foods and lead to shortages here in New York State.

Governor Hochul stressed that while bananas and other certain fruits might be in short supply, other necessary items like medicine will not be in short supply. She urged New Yorkers to not panic buy during the next several weeks.

The dockworkers along the East Coast are striking in order to get a better contract after shipping companies have recorded record profits over the past several years and to halt the implementation of automation that would reduce the number of jobs. Last year dock workers along the West Coast signed a new deal that increased wages and offered better working conditions.

This is the first strike by the dockworkers union since 1977. The strike affects 12 ports along the East Coast and the Gulf of Mexico including the New York/New Jersey Port.
