    Ulysses S. Grant

Ulysses S. Grant was both a general and a president, and his life is a powerful example of a comeback. He attended West Point and entered the Army as an officer. He served in the Mexican-American War and then was sent out west. He didn't like being separated from his family, began drinking and eventually quit the Army and went back home. When the Civil War broke being out a West Point graduate with combat experience, he was contacted by the Union Army and asked to rejoin, which he did. Great victories at Fort Donaldson and Shiloh got the attention of President Lincoln. Grant was eventually promoted to top general of all Union forces, and led his forces to victory in the Civil War. Grant was elected President of the United States serving two terms. The culmination of his comeback was the book he wrote after leaving the Presidency. Grant's Memoirs became the biggest selling book in American history, excluding the Bible.

    Abraham Lincoln

Abraham Lincoln is considered by many to have been the greatest President in the history of the United States. His mother died when he was nine and he was essentially self -taught. He took his first run at elected office and lost. Following the death of his first true love he suffered from what most today would call a nervous breakdown. He ran for U.S. Congress and lost. He ran for the U.S. Senate and lost twice as well as losing the 1856 election as the Vice-Presidential candidate. In 1860 Lincoln was elected the sixteenth President of the United States. His Gettysburg Address is the most quoted speech in American history. His Emancipation Proclamation freed the slaves and stands as one of the greatest acts of moral leadership in history. He was re-elected in 1864 and helped reunite a nation.

He traveled doing good, healing the sick and teaching God’s message. He preformed many miracles, and made political and religious leaders nervous. Jesus was arrested and brought before the Roman authorities for punishment. Pilate, the Roman governor, did not think Jesus was guilty of anything, but gave into pressure and sentenced him to death.
