If you have short lashes, look for a lengthening mascara, like L’Oréal Clean Definition Telescopic. It comes with a long, thin brush that has stubby bristles so you can reach every lash, including short, fine baby lashes. It resists clumping and smudging and gives you long, defined lashes that are appropriate for daytime. Other great lengthening mascaras are Nars Larger Than Life and Estée Lauder Double Wear Zero-Smudge.

If your lashes are fine and/or sparse, look for a thickening or volumizing mascara, like Yves Saint Laurent Volume Effet Faux Cils or L’Oréal Voluminous. These typically have bushier brushes and contain waxes (beeswax, paraffin) to coat the lashes and make them thicker. Because the formula can be thick and goopy, scrape the wand against the inside of the tube to remove excess mascara. (Too much mascara weighs your lashes down and they won’t curl.)

If your lashes are short and fine, first use a coat of volumizing mascara, then apply a lengthening mascara to the lash tips.

If you use a lash curler, curl before applying mascara so your lashes won’t stick or break. First get as close as possible to the base of the lashes, then gently pump the curler three or four times. (Don’t crimp the lashes.) Move to the ends and curl again so the lashes look naturally curled rather than sticking straight up.
