Target Making Major Change At Stores In New York
Target recently announced they are making a major change when it comes to security at all its stores in New York State.
Earlier this week, officials with the retail giant announced that they will be changing the dollar amount they used to determine to stop and prosecute shoplifters at their stores.

The old rule was that Target employees would not halt any shoplifting incidents that involved products that were worth $100 or less. The new policy now lowers that threshold to $50. The new policy is expected to start being enforced this summer.
The new rule is expected to help reduce the amount of retail theft incidents which had cut into profit margins for the company as well as other retail companies.

IS SHOPPING A FELONY OR MISDEMEANOR IN NEW YORK STATE?
According to New York State law, if the value of the items stolen is less than $1000 it will be considered a misdemeanor. If the goods are worth $1000 or more, you could be charged with a felony.
WHAT IS THE PENALTY FOR SHOPLIFTING IN NEW YORK?
People convicted of shoplifting could face up to 1 year in jail along with possible fines. If a shoplifter is convicted of a felony they could be charged with time in state prison.

In New York State, if convicted of a misdemeanor, that charge could stay on your record forever. In some cases, you might be able to get your conviction sealed after 10 years. You would need to contact a lawyer if you wanted to go that route.
