Students in New York State will have Thursday, June 19th, off from school this year. This day is Juneteenth, and public schools across the state will be closed for this holiday.
What Is Juneteenth?
Juneteenth is a celebration of the end of slavery in the United States. It is celebrated on June 19th, and many people consider it the nation's second Independence Day.
It was back in 1865 on June 19th that Union troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, to free the remaining enslaved African Americans after the end of the Civil War. This happened nearly two and a half years after Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation.
Is Juneteenth A New York State Holiday?
Yes, Juneteenth is a recognized New York State holiday. It is also a Federal holiday, which means that most banks, the US Postal Service, and the stock market will also be closed for a day of celebration.
How Can I Celebrate Juneteenth?
There are several things you can do to celebrate Juneteenth. You can find and participate in many of the local celebrations and parades. You can support local black-owned businesses, and you can volunteer to help out those in need.
