Chances are that every day you talk with someone who complains that the taxes in New York are outrageous.

You wouldn't be totally wrong if you thought that as well. According to kiplinger.com, New York State has the 10th highest overall tax rate in the country.

As inflation continues to increase, you might find yourself trying to stretch your dollar even further.

It looks like the lawmakers in Albany are not doing as much stretching as the rest of us.

Did you know that lawmakers voted themselves a pay raise this past December that went into effect at the start of 2023? That increase in their pay now makes New York Lawmakers the highest-paid state legislatures in the entire country.

Lawmakers passed a bill that gave themselves a pay raise of $32,000 per year. That raise brought the base salary for lawmakers to $142,000 per year. , Their previous base salary was $110,000 per year which means the new salary is a 29% raise over their previous salary.

I understand the need to increase pay for the cost of living and inflation but a $32,000 per year increase seems to be very generous considering that some of those lawmakers are fighting the state on raising the minimum wage over $15 per hour.

Before this pay increase, lawmakers in California had the distinction of being the highest-paid lawmakers in the country. Their base salary is $119,000 per year. That means New York lawmakers are making more than $20,000 more a year than those in California.

Which if you ask me is a bit crazy.
