Leslie Frazier Named Best Defensive Play Caller In The NFL
The Buffalo Bills had one of the best defenses in the NFL last year. A lot of that was the talent on the field, but PFF says it was their play-caller that made a huge difference.
So much is always said about the Buffalo Bills' incredible offense with Josh Allen and Stefon Diggs. It's what just about every media outlet talks about. But what they aren't talking about is how good that defense has been under Leslie Frazier.
The Bills lost one of their biggest impact players with Tre'Davious White part of the way through the season and still found a way to be dominant through the end of the year.
Pro Football Focus just listed their best defensive play callers and named Leslie Frazier at the top of the list. They came up with their list with this method - they use PFF grades, adjusted for opponents and situation, to come up with an expectation for how a team should do on a play — both in terms of expected points added and success rate. Then they take the difference between what actually happened and attribute that to coaching.
"I tweeted about the advantages the Buffalo Bills' defense has over some other units— namely their schedule last year and the fact that their games are played with the highest wind speeds in football. That said, they allowed an average of 4.6 yards per play, and did so for a large part of the season without their best cornerback or without a highly paid player along their front four. At some point, Frazier is going to get another look as a head coach." - Eric Eager, Pro Football Focus
The Bills lost their offensive coordinator, Brian Daboll, at the end of last year after a head coaching job popped up in New York. Frazier was considered for a few jobs outside Buffalo too but wasn't offered a job.
Is it only a matter of time before we are looking for a new defensive coordinator also?
