Hockey fans across the world are waking up to the news that longtime NHL player Kyle Okposo is hanging up his skates after 17 years in the league.

Okposo won the Stanley Cup with Florida this past season and decided to retire as NHL training camps began this week.

Okposo played for the New York Islanders, Buffalo Sabres, and Flordia Panthers during his career. He was traded to Florida last season from Buffalo.

He was a long time captain of the Buffalo Sabres and ended up playing over 500 games with the team.


Okposo penned an open letter to hockey fans on "X" formerly known as Twitter, thanking them for their support during his career.

Okposo was the 7th overall draft pick in the 2006 NHL draft by the New York Islanders. He would play with the Islanders for 10 years before signing with the Buffalo Sabres as a free agent in 2016.

He signed a 7-year $42 million dollar contract with the Sabres in 2016 and played in Buffalo until he was traded to Florida at the trade deadline in 2023. He would go on his only Stanley Cup with the Florida Panthers in 2023.

For his career, Okposo played in 1051 NHL games scoring 242 goals and had 372 assists for a total of 614 points.
