According to a recent New York State Police news release on December 11, 2023, over 1,100 candidates attended processing weekend at the NYSP academy in Albany over the weekend of December 2nd.

The processing turnout was the largest in over a decade. For candidates to attend the processing weekend, they first must apply to take and pass a Trooper entrance examination at one of 60 locations throughout New York State.

After the entrance examination, according to the New York State Police news release, an eligibility list is established, and eligible candidates are invited to attend the processing weekend where they participate in several requirements.

These requirements include a physical ability test, vision and hearing examinations, education verification of college transcripts, and completion of a background questionnaire. If all requirements are met, a candidate receives a Conditional Offer of Appointment to the position of New York State Trooper.

12,691 individuals applied to take the most recent exam which ended on October 1st, and there was quite an increase in applications among military members as well, now that the maximum age to apply to become a New York State Trooper went from 29 to 34, along with a revised tattoo policy change that went into effect in 2022.

According to the New York State Police, the starting salary upon appointment to the academy is $64,346, and the minimum total compensation after one year of service is between $98,300 and $109,009, plus benefits and retirement.
