Thursday’s Top Stories In Western New York
Here is a look at some of the top stories for Thursday in Western New York.
1 - Yesterday we tied the record high of 74 degrees in Buffalo and today we should blow right past the current record high. Today we are looking at a high of 77 across Western New York which is 4 degrees warmer than the current record of 73 degrees which was recorded back in 1971. The good news for trick-or-treating today is that the rain should hold off until around 9 or 10 tonight.
2 – If you are trick-or-treating with the kids tonight or handing out candy at home, most places in Western New York recommend trick-or-treating between 6 and 8 pm. Some towns like Newfane, Tonawanda, and the city of Buffalo start earlier and some towns like Depew allow trick-or-treating to go until 8:30 pm.
3 – You still have four more days to get out and vote early ahead of next Tuesday’s election. So far almost 100,000 people across Western New York have cast their vote early since it all started on Saturday. Polls will be open today and tomorrow from Noon until 9 pm and then this weekend from 9 am until 5 pm.

4 –Double-check your Powerball ticket this morning. The New York State Lottery announced that one “Big Money” winning ticket was sold in New York from last night’s Powerball drawing. That ticket matched four out of five numbers and also had the Powerball and won $50,000. There were also over 50 4th and 5th place winning tickets that are worth $100 each. 5 - If you need heat with your heating bills this winter, you can apply for HEAP benefits starting tomorrow. The Home Energy Assistance Program or HEAP allows New York residents who meet certain financial criteria to get assistance with paying for their heating bills from New York State. If you qualify, the HEAP money is paid right to the energy company so you don’t have to do anything but apply.
6 - Officials with the New York State Department of Transportation are warning drivers to be more alert as we continue the deadliest time of the year for deer/car accidents. October through December is the time the most fatal deer/car accidents happen across the state due to increased activity of deer during rutting season. Most deer are active are dawn and dusk and you should be extra careful when driving around during those times.
