It's hard to believe that it was just 3 years ago when a terrible act of domestic terrorism took the lives of ten people in Buffalo, seriously injured three people, and left a scar on the soul of Buffalo that will leave the region forever changed.

In the years since that horrible day, hundreds of Western New Yorkers have been working tirelessly to help Buffalo recover and work towards better learning, improving our communities, and ensuring that we foster an environment that would improve the general welfare of the people.

The work that has been doing by groups like the 5/14 Remembrance Committee, Agents for Advocacy, Legacy 514, and more has helped move Buffalo forward, but there is still more work to be done and it can only be done with help.

Here's How You Can Honor Those Lost Three Years Ago On 5/14

With the third anniversary of this tragedy approaching, several events and things are happening that you can participate in this week to honor those who were affected by the terrorist attack that was motivated by a white supremacist who was filled with racial hate, and the overall community.

Here are a few things you can do to make Buffalo better this week.

  1. Buffalo's Clementine Gold Group has organized a 5/14 Day of Service & Remembrance, which is filled with activities that will help build the community and encourage the people. From cleaning a park or field to writing words of encouragement, there is something you can do to help. You can sign up for events here.
  2. Agents for Advocacy and Colored Girls Bike Too are teaming up to have a series of speakers who will inspire the community at CBGT's headquarters located at 1353 Jefferson Avenue. These speeches begin at Noon.
  3. Hope Rises is hosting a WNY for Hope Diaper & Hygiene Drive that runs until Wednesday, May 21, 2025, and the community is asked to donate diapers, wipes, feminine hygiene products, and other supplies. All donated items will benefit Home Beneath Our Feet and Every Bottom Covered.
  4. Tops Friendly Markets will host a memorial ceremony on Wednesday, May 14, 2025, at the corner of Jefferson Avenue and Landon Street, starting at 2 pm.
  5. After the memorial ceremony, all sorts of other group and community activities will take place on East Utica Street, between Jefferson Avenue and Dupont Street. There will be things like line dancing, live music, free haircuts and braids, and more. You can find a full list of activities here.

WKBW-TV spoke with the founder of Agents for Advocacy, Mark Talley, who talked about how 5/14 affected him.

For me, 5/14 is the day I lost my mother... The day my emotional equilibrium shattered. I've always said I'm not inherently nice, but rather, I do nice things. I’m blunt, I’m tough, and on that day, I became even more so, losing the one person who could stir any remaining warmth within me.

Buffalo will get better with our help.
