Health Code Violations In Niagara County Last Month

Niagara County has published a list of restaurants with health code violations during their latest inspections in December. Every day I get a new notice from the Food and Drug Administration about a food recall. It is pretty disturbing actually. Why are there so many issues with the food we are supposed to consume? Who is inspecting our food before it leaves the farm or factory?

When it comes to the food we eat from restaurants or other food preparation spots, there are food inspectors who work very hard each month to check the safety of the spots in Niagara County. They go to multiple restaurants and check for health and safety issues. The food inspectors find issues like, "Food from unapproved source, spoiled, adulterated on premises" and critical violations like "Potentially hazardous foods are not stored under refrigeration except during necessary preparation or approved precooling procedures (room temperature storage)." Out of all the restaurants inspected during the month of December for health code violations, 49 restaurants failed their inspections and 39 passed. That's a pretty good ratio compared to other counties.

It's important that we can feel confident when we take our families to restaurants. No one wants to put their family at risk by having them eat food that is unsafe and unsanitary. Aside from a hair or a fly in your food, the Centers For Disease Control says there are 31 pathogens known to cause foodborne illness that could harm you or your family. There are around 37.2 million Americans who suffer from food-related illnesses each year. Of those, 228,744 people end up in the hospital due to their food-borne illnesses, and 2,612 die annually. That may not be a big number, but for each family that loses a family member, it is huge!
