Two weeks in a row, the Buffalo Bills have found themselves in the biggest games of the NFL Season so far, and, once again, two weeks in a row, there were some missed calls by the officiating crew that have football fans scratching their heads.

Last week it was the AFC Divisional Playoff game between the Baltimore Ravens and Buffalo Bills, which the Bills pulled out on top with a big 27-25 win. The second game, the AFC Championship Game against the rival Kansas City Chiefs, didn't turn out as good for the Bills as KC held on at the last minutes to win 32-29.

As the season for the Bills ends, there are a couple of things that are clear:

  1. Buffalo loves its Bills, and
  2. The NFL has an officiating problem.

While bad calls are part of the game and continue to be a nearly universal complaint for all teams and their fans, this year, it seems that there were several big calls missed by officials. However, according to data from the league this year, they aren't very common. The average NFL game has more than 150 plays, and league data shows that nearly 99% of calls made by the refs are accurate and that refs generally have a high level of vision, according to the National Institute of Health, but the general opinion that refs have bad vision continues.

However, those stats don't lessen the impact of bad calls, and that was on full display during the AFC Championship.

For the second straight week, the laser eye surgery company LASIK posted on their X (formerly known as Twitter) feed that they would LITERALLY provide free eye surgery for NFL officials. After several bad or missed calls by the refs, I really think the NFL needs to take a look at the vision benefits the league offers and make a change.
