New York families, as well as those in Michigan and Minnesota, will suffer. As if grocery prices aren't high enough, it is another financial stressor for New York families. Trump, who said he would bring grocery prices down on day one of his term, recently said that he doesn't care about egg prices, so bringing down food bills for American families is not his priority at all. Now, heating costs will increase for many New Yorkers, and the timing couldn't be worse since it is still winter.
Unfortunately, American policies on trade with our allies will cost New York families. Trump has flip-flopped on imposing tariffs. He has announced applying them on Canada and Mexico, then rescinded them, then announced them again. As of today, Monday, March 10, 2025, they are paused for a month, but who ultimately knows if he will change his mind on a whim again? Canada seems to be tired of Trump's game.

Ontario's Premier Doug Ford said that three American states will face tariffs on electricity thanks to Trump's tariffs. Trump's tariffs will drive electricity prices up by at least 25 percent. Premier Ford said,
“I love Americans. It’s been 20 years of my life. But in saying that, no, we’re going to put a 25 percent tariff on electricity coming from Ontario to Michigan, New York and Minnesota. And isn’t this a shame? It’s an absolute mess. He’s created chaos. He ran on a mandate. The lower cost, lower inflation, create more jobs. It’s the total opposite. You know, people are going to be losing their jobs in the U.S. and in Canada, and inflation is happening already.”
