For Western New York lovebirds, there’s no shortage of things to do and places to go to celebrate Valentine’s Day. We’ve got plenty of romantic restaurants, gorgeous museums, and popular date spots in the area to peruse with your significant other. 

But savvy Buffalonians know there’s a secret to making sure you and your boo have the best Valentine’s Day in Western New York - and it might not be what you think. 

It all stems from a recent post on the Buffalo subreddit, where a user simply asked for advice and ideas on what they could do to celebrate Valentine’s Day here in Western New York. 

Redditors passed out plenty of good suggestions, like heading to a winery, ice skating at canalside, and visiting the Buffalo Botanical Gardens. 

However, there was one common idea that was frequently mentioned to the original poster - and that’s not going out on Valentine’s Day at all.

If you and your partner are dead-set on going out on the town in Buffalo this Valentine’s Day, it really does make more sense to celebrate the day before or the day after. Prices at popular restaurants in the area are often hiked up for the holiday (the same goes for flowers), and you’ll likely have to make a reservation. Even if you score a res, your favorite spot is bound to be jam-packed with people.

If you don’t plan on grabbing some grub this Valentine’s Day, you’ll still have to deal with crowds of couples pretty much anywhere you go in Buffalo.  If your better half is up for it, why not take the time to celebrate the day before or after? That way, you’ll still have a great Buffalo date night without all of the Valentine’s Day headaches. (And sports-loving couples can even hit up a Sabres game on the 13th or the 15th!)

If you want to avoid all of the Valentine’s Day hassles this year, we say stay home and snuggle up on the couch with a cozy at-home date night, and enjoy all of the romantic stops Western New York has to offer on another (less crazy) day.
