“Super Bowl Monday” IS Coming – Here’s When

Splitting headache? Raspy voice? Tummy troubles? Sounds like you’ve got a case of the “Super Bowl Flu.”

Every year, the idea is brought up that the day after the Super Bowl should be a national holiday.

Also every year, many New Yorkers laugh off the suggestion - that is, until the day actually arrives.

Ugh. 

Could we really see the day after the Super Bowl become a holiday that keeps us home?

After all, according to a recent poll, an estimated 16 million workers called in sick the day after the big game, giving it the day the nickname “Super Sick Monday.”

And those who do manage to trudge their way into the office are noticeably less productive that day. 

In Tennessee, two lawmakers even proposed a bill last year that would make the first Monday after the Super Bowl a holiday (it’s still sitting in the state legislature). Could we make that a reality here in New York State?

Could Super Bowl Monday Become A National Holiday?

On a national level, the chances of “Super Bowl Monday” becoming a federal holiday are pretty grim. 

For one thing, in close to forty years, only two new national holidays have been added; Juneteenth (June 19th) in 2021, and Martin Luther King Jr. Day in 1983. 

We’ve got a much better chance at seeing “Super Bowl Monday” become a state holiday here in New York.

In 2024, two new state holidays are now recognized here in the Empire State - Lunar New Year, and Diwali (both of which are incredibly culturally significant holidays that have been celebrated for thousands of years).

"Super Bowl Monday", if we can all be honest with ourselves, is pretty much just an excuse to stay home and nurse our collective hangover.

But there IS good news for those who want (or need) a day off after the Super Bowl…

We’ll Soon Get The Day Off After Super Bowl Monday

You read that right - one day, residents of New York State and across the country will be able to hit the snooze bar on Monday after going hard during the Super Bowl the night before. 

However, there’s a catch. 

The NFL has already released the dates and locations of the Super Bowl for the next few years. They are:

• Super Bowl LIX: Feb. 9, 2025 at the Caesars Superdome in New Orleans, LA
• Super Bowl LX: Feb. 8, 2026 at Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara, CA
• Super Bowl LXI: Feb. 14, 2027 at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, CA

Although it looks like for the next two years we’ll still have to drag ourselves into work post-Super Bowl, we can finally catch a break in 2027. 

Super Bowl LXI will be held on February 14th that year, and falls the day before one particular federal holiday where Americans will have the day off from work and school - Presidents Day. 

So yes, sleepy New York citizens, thanks to an upcoming coincidence with the NFL schedule, we will eventually see a day off after the Super Bowl. We’ll just have to wait three years to take advantage of it.
