There is about to be one of the neatest events to ever happen in the sky over Western New York, and it all takes place this coming Monday.

The cold weather has settled in around New York State, and here in the Buffalo area, we have had some bone-chilling nights! Clear skies have made for the perfect conditions for a deep freeze. The forecast is calling for a bit of a warming trend as we start the weekend.

But hopefully, the warmer temps won't bring clouds with them as there will be a rare event with the moon on Monday.

As the full moon rises on Monday, it will known as "The Wolf Moon". NASA says that "According to this almanac, as the full Moon in January, this is the Wolf Moon, from the packs of wolves heard howling outside the villages amid the cold and deep snows of winter". But there is even more to be excited about.

The full moon will be passing in front of Mars in what is known as an occulation. SYFY.com says "The Moon will cover Mars for about an hour and 15 minutes that evening. The precise timing of the occultation will vary depending on your position on the globe".

I never claim to know much about the stars or the Moon beyond what I learned in grammar or high school. But I have to say that there are some things that I really enjoy seeing. For example, the solar eclipse this past summer was one of the coolest experiences that I have ever witnessed. I am not sure if this lunar event will offer the same. But it is something to look forward to in the deep freeze of a Buffalo winter.
