Among the many employment laws on the books in New York State, there is one Federal law that is designed to protect employees and job candidates from having to take a lie detector or polygraph test.

We are in the second half of 2025 and if your resolution or goal at the start of the year was to get a new job, you need to get those applications out and start looking. This year seems to be flying by!

But aside from a good resume, good references and a clean social media past, what might your employer expect from you? Is the use of a lie detector test a legal option for those who are hiring to weed out the best of the best?

Here in New York, as is the case across the country , there is a specific federal law that called "The Employee Polygraph Protection Act"

According to the Federal law, "Employers generally may not require or request any employee or job applicant to take a lie detector test, or discharge, discipline, or discriminate against an employee or job applicant for refusing to take a test or for exercising other rights under the Act".

As we wrap up the summer and the summertime and seasonal jobs comes to an end, you may be looking for a new job of full time job. There seems to be some good options and many of the retailers will be looking for extra workers soon as well.
