Here are some tricks to picking a nice, sweet, juicy watermelon.
MAKE SURE TO LOOK FOR A FEMALE WATERMELON
Pick a female watermelon. Female watermelons are more uniform in shape. They are shorter and rounder and are sweeter than male ones. Male watermelons are elongated and have less sweetness to them.
MAKE SURE YOU LOOK AND FEEL THE STEM
Look for a dry stem. If the stem on your watermelon is dry that means most of the water and juices are inside the melon. A tough, green stem means that some of that sweet juice has been extracted.
CHECK OUT THE SPOTS AND COLORS OF THE WATERMELON
Look at the spot where the watermelon was lying on the ground. A yellow/orange spot means that the watermelon is sweet. A white spot means the watermelon will have a bland taste.
DOUBLE-CHECK THE WEBBING ON THE WATERMELON
Look at the webbing on the watermelon. Webbing that is long and spread out means a juicy, tasty watermelon. Short, compact webbing means more of a bland flavor to the watermelon.
Using these four tips should help you pick out a nice, fresh, juicy, sweet watermelon every time.
