According to the website, beef2live.com, the cost of a pound of ground beef has increased every month so far in 2023 and that looks to remain the case as we head into grilling season across New York.
The current average cost of a pound of ground has increased every month so far this year and we could see the price reach record highs by mid-summer.
WHAT IS THE CURRENT COST OF GROUND BEEF?
The latest pricing from the U.S. Bureau Of Labor shows that a pound of ground beef cost $4.75 in January of this year and has already gone up to $4.81 per pound.
WHAT WAS THE RECORD PRICE FOR GROUND BEEF?
The record price for ground beef was set back in August of 2022. The average price of a pound of ground beef was $4.94. If the current trend continues, we could see that number or even surpass it this summer.
WHY ARE MEAT PRICES SO HIGH?
It has to do with the COVID-19 pandemic. The demand for beef dropped so suppliers cut back on the production and they have yet to catch up with the new higher demand for ground beef. Higher demand along with low supply means higher prices.
WHAT ARE THE ALTERNATIVES TO GROUND BEEF?
If you want to avoid paying higher prices for ground beef, you can look at alternatives like non-meat products, or chicken. While chicken prices are also increasing, it is still cheaper than a pound of ground beef.
