Another round of announced store closings could have an impact on gamers in Western New York.

GameStop has announced its plan to close more stores across the country as it tries to stay profitable.

The gaming retail chain closed 950 stores in 2024 and is now planning on shutting down part of the 2035 stores that still remain open.

Shutting down brick-and-mortar stores will help with costs and overhead as the company looks to slash expenses in 2025.

At the time of this writing, there are 10 GameStop locations in Western New York. While GameStop has not announced which locations will be shut down, they did close nearly 30 locations in New York State last year, but not here in Western New York, which could mean that these locations could be part of the next round of closures.

GameStop joins a long list of National retailers that have closed stores nationwide and here in Western New York. Over the past several years, stores like Joann's Fabrics, Rite-Aid, Big Lots, and Party City have shut down locations to either help with their bottom line or as part of bankruptcy proceedings.

Before digital downloads became the main way gamers got games, GameStop was one of the primary ways gamers got the newest games. I remember when I was younger, waiting in line at the Galleria in front of Gamestop to get the midnight release of Madden football and Halo.
