Last night's full moon (Super Moon) was a rare celestial event that happens when the moon reaches the closest possible point of its orbit around the Earth. It was roughly 14 percent bigger and about 30 percent brighter, as illustrated above.

I took this picture of the moon at 12:01 a.m. from Lewiston, NY. It had been overcast most of the evening, but skies cleared and the moon was clearly spectacular.
