A horrific accident on the Thruway sent several people to the hospital, and that has caused a strain on the blood supply in New York State.
There is an urgent need for blood to help keep the blood banks in Western New York at a healthy level after that accident on the Thruway.

Guidelines For Giving Blood In New York State
- Being at least 17 years old. You can be 16 if you have a parent's permission to give.
- You must be in good health and feel well the day of your donation.
- You need to weigh at least 110 pounds at the time of your donation.
Here Is What Could Prevent You From Giving Blood
- Medications: If you take certain medications, you might not be able to give blood.
- Illness: If you've had a cold or flu, you must not have symptoms for at least 72 hours before you give blood.
- Tattoos & Piercings: If you have had tattoos, piercings, or other body modifications recently, you might not lose your eligibility to give blood.
- Other Conditions: Some medical conditions and travel history can affect your eligibility to donate.
Blood Donations Are Needed ASAP
The New York Blood Center issued an alert that New York State is in a critical state for the need for blood. The need for O+ and O- blood is critical since it is the universal blood type used in emergencies.
