Residents in the Town of Amherst will start to see something newer and brighter across the town over the next 12 months.

The town announced that they are in the process of purchasing all the street lights from National Grid and converting them over to LED lights.

The town is set to hire a private contractor to make the switch.

The switch is meant to help control costs by using more energy-efficient LED lights compared to traditional street lights.

WHAT ARE THE ADVANTAGES OF USING LED STREETLIGHTS?

LEDs lights use less energy because they require less power to emit the same amount of light as their conventional equivalents. Incandescent bulbs release 90% of their energy as heat and fluorescent lights release about 80% of their energy as heat. LED lights are 40 to 60% more energy efficient than traditional lighting.

According to the World Bank, Using LED lights instead of traditional lighting can reduce carbon emissions by the equivalent of taking 8.5 million cars off the road for a year.

LED lights last longer than traditional lights. On average, LED bulbs will last up to 5 times longer than fluorescent lights and up to 30 times longer than incandescent ones.
