Special Olympics New York will be putting on the 15th annual Polar Plunge once again this year at Woodlawn Beach, and this year, there's a huge incentive for students.

If you've ever seen the Polar Plunge, you know how crazy it can get.  It's hundreds of crazy Western New Yorkers who are willing to brave the elements for a great cause.  They will gather at the beach and then take the icy plunge into the freezing cold waters of Lake Erie to help raise money for Special Olympics New York, which is  the largest state chapter in the country, serving more than 51,000 registered Athletes and Unified Partners across New York with year-round sports training, athletic competition, and health screenings.

Want to join?  It's coming up on December 4th (yes...in the dead of winter) at Woodlawn Beach in Blasdell.

Here's the cool part.  They're doing something this year that has never been done before.  This year, they're going to have a whole separate day for high schoolers and younger that would like to take the plunge.  This one will take place the day before on December 3rd.  It's being called the first-ever Cool School Polar Plunge and...they've got a huge incentive for them to raise some money.

First Student will award $1,000 scholarships to the top male and female fundraisers, who will also be crowned “king and queen” at the event.

Yep...you could get a scholarship for helping out a great cause and having fun at one of the biggest events nationwide for Special Olympics.  School teams can register at www.PolarPlungeNY.org/Buffalo.

In honor of the Polar Plunge coming back, I thought I'd put together a list of some of the coolest costumes that you could wear as you take the leap!
