Now that I am a homeowner I try to take every chance I get to make the most of my backyard. During the summer, sitting out grilling and using our firepit is the perfect way to spend an evening.

Now in the winter, it is a little bit different. Now that I moved to Hamburg, the snow is always flying, and that doesn't make the perfect atmosphere for being outside.

It was something I was talking about recently with the experts at Tripi's Landscaping, and they have plenty of ideas for helping you get a full 12 months of use out of your investment each year. They specialize in complete landscape design renovations including outdoor kitchens, firepits and fireplaces, and patios.

Here are some ideas for designing an all-seasons dream backyard:

1) Be strategic with privacy screening and paving materials. Soaking in a hot tub in 10-degree weather sounds delightful — but it's probably even more enjoyable with privacy screening that blocks cooler wind and a solid walkway or patio that stands up to wet and snowy weather better than pebbles or rocks.

2) Add warmth with a fire pit or fireplace. Not only are they natural gathering areas, but they add warmth that wards off the chill. Imagine cozying up here with your favorite drinks and good company. Consider propane or gas options for added convenience.

3) Raise a roof. Some people enjoy the sunlight pergolas let in with their open roofs, but if you'd like to keep out a little more of the weather, consider covering your outdoor kitchen or patio area.
